Our Annual Christmas party was a hit as always, with entertainment from the Sophie's Café group and a Chinese Auction. The group from Sophie's consisted of Meghan Tuazon and Dodie Poppleton on vocals, and Andrew Stowe on keyboard. It was a wonderful performance! The trio announced that they will perform at a Sophie's candle light event celebrating Valentine's Day. So many helped to make this evening a success, and special thanks are due to Lion Judy Zimmerman for arranging and paying for the entertainment and Lion Ed Fairbrother for conducting the Chinese Auction. We owe an Extra Special thanks to Barb Rhodes, who donated, wrapped, and presented all of the prizes for the auction. As an aside, Lion Ed may have smashed all records on collecting bids for a single item. In this case it was a coffee mug that fetched $37.50, thanks in large part to a bidding war between Lions Bob Byland and Judy Zimmerman. I believe that Lion Judy was victorious, but I will certainly print a retraction if necessary :-)
December work parties included Bell Ringing at Minier's and a Blood Drive. Thanks to all who put Lionism into action by participating! We also have word from Lion Lance that Lion Bim has had his feeding tube removed and is feeling well.
Activity Report for December:
Signature Project - Lion Bob Byland presented the Club's idea for a signature project honoring our veterans to the Town Board at their meeting on December 10th. The Town approved said project. A final resolution giving details will be given to the membership at our next meeting. In the spring there will be a formal presentation. Membership Rules - The Membership Rules have been distributed to all current members. Lion John Hoos suggested that all new members should be given a packet of information on Lionism and also a copy of the recently promulgated Membership Rules. Christmas Party - At our Christmas party a total of $340 was donated by the members for holiday help for the hungry. Most of this money was given to the Big Flats Food Pantry, with a small amount given to the Horseheads Food Pantry. Lion Judy Zimmerman had arranged for the entertainment and asked that she not be reimbursed for the fee. Eyeglasses - Lion Al Draht reported that one person was helped last month to purchase eyeglasses. The total cost was $93 at Empire Vision, - who did give us a discount. It was decided that the Club would be willing to help any individual in Chemung County who could not receive help elsewhere. The basic cost of an eye exam and glasses would be covered. Should the number of people applying for help become burdensome to the Club, each case would be decided on an individual basis and/or a new policy would be set in motion. Program - Lion Mike Yanak said that the Club would be celebrating its 39th anniversary in February. Since Lion Don Williams is one of the Charter Members he was asked, and agreed, to present a program that evening. Christmas Gift - Lion Grace Yanak made a motion for the Club to deliver a gift of some kind to Lion Don Roe who is in the nursing home. Lion Pat McKenzie seconded motion. January Board Meeting - The January Board Meeting will take place on Tuesday evening, January 20th, due to the fact that Monday is a holiday and the Community Center will be closed.
