Let's lead off with a big Thank You to Lion Ed Fairbrother and helpers for their help with parking at the NASCAR races this summer. The Corning Lions donated $157 to our Club for their efforts! We also received a letter from the Big Flats Community Food Pantry thanking us for the $320 we collected via the Holiday Help for the Hungry project, chaired by Lion Bill Powell. The money was put on account at the Food Bank in the name of the local Food Pantry. Survey for the next Lion's Year - First Vice President Lion Judy Zimmerman has posed some questions to members and circulated a questionnaire for the next Lions year. If you have not completed yours, please do so!
King Lion Mike and Lion Grace Yanak visited Lion Don Roe at Elcor recently, bringing him a box of candy. They report that Lion Don is having memory difficulties and was somewhat unresponsive.
At our second meeting, Lion Judy Zimmerman introduced our speaker for the night, Kim Salisbury. Kim has been a resident for 20+ years and is currently the Long Term Care Program Coordinator for the Chemung County Office for the Aging. She spoke about her position as Long Term Care Program Coordinator, which involves training the Ombudsmen, or volunteer advocates for long term care patients. Kim recruits and conducts a 36 hour training program for volunteers at the Big Flats Community Center. The Regional Long Term Care Ombudsman Program serves Chemung, Schuyler, and Tioga counties. She also handed out some useful brochures and materials. Finally, it should be noted that in addition to our Club's anniversary, Lions Mike and Grace Yanak celebrated their 54th in January. Congratulations!
39th Anniversary Celebration on Monday, Feb. 9th:
Lion Don Williams is organizing our 39th anniversary celebration to be held on Feb. 9th, and the program will include short (2 or 3 minute) speeches by members on the history of projects undertaken by the Club. Historical documents of the Club are still available for member review at the Community Center and would be stored in Director Judy Zimmerman's office. Hours are 8AM to 9PM M-F, Saturdays by appointment only. Should be a fun evening!
Our Club received a cover letter and raffle tickets from NYS & Bermuda Multiple District, a thank you note and funding request from the Girl Scouts / Glenda Reinshagen, Development Director, and a thank you note and funding request from Lions Camp Badger. Signature Project - King Lion Mike Yanak reported that Lion Bob Byland had presented our plans for a War Memorial to the Town Board and it was approved. Next step is to consider the wording on the plaque. A question was asked about an upcoming article about our Club in the New Big Flats Times, and Lion Grace Yanak responded that it should come out in the spring issue.
