September, 2012

As the Big Flats Lions begin another year of service, I will be doing my best to get the newsletter out in a timely fashion. To do this I will need the help of all of you in feeding me news of both completed and upcoming projects. I will, course include items of importance form the Board and Membership meetings. I have set up a separate e-mail account for this. Thanks in advance for all your help!, Lion Rita

Community Kitchen
Under Dave Marks leadership we served lunch at the Community Kitchen on July 13. The next date is September 8.
Blood Drive
The Red Cross Blood Drive was held on August 28th. 23 pints of whole blood and 3 doubles were collected with 3 Lions donating and 4 Lions tending the canteen. The next drive will be October 30.
The Lions have started their annual 50/50 campaign in an attempt to raise $1250 for the club to support local and national charities and activities such as Big Flats youth groups, some canine companion training programs, vision projects and other local service needs. Two hundred fifty $10 tickets were distributed to Lions at their annual summer picnic in August. Ten drawings begin October 22 and wrap up the second Monday in February. Weekly winners are placed back in the pool so there are potentially 10 chances for each ticket to win prizes from $10 to $20culminating with three $100 winners at the last drawing..
Ramp Building
During the last two weeks we have built 2 ramps and we have requests for 2 more and possibly 3 more. So far this year we have built 5 ramps. The total for last year and this year is 11 ramps.

Tom Sawyer Project
Seven hundred fifteen white pickets do not sound like much to paint. In June & July it took 9 gallons of paint, 4 painting sessions, 10 Lions and 4 friends of the Big Flats Lions Club to put in the 90 service hours needed to paint the fence around Pioneer Cemetery on North Kahler Road. This monster of a project belongs in the “once in a decade” category. I suspect many Lions smile every time they drive by that cemetery; I know I do. Here are before & after and during photos of this service project.
