Big Flats Lions had a busy month in October as reported by several project chairs.
o Firstly there was an Adopt-a-Highway the last weekend in Sept. Lion Gene reported 5 Lions took part, including new members, and innumerable bags of trash was collected for DOT to pick up. We worked from Hibbard Rd. overpass to County line. This is our 21st yr. of doing highway clean-up!
o Many Lions and friends took part in the successful coffee stop at Kanona Rest Area over Columbus Day weekend according to Lion Lance. Net profit was over $1000.00 for Community Service Fund. Lion Gary reported that 5 Lions took part in renovations to the floor and support structure of the storage shed at Camp Badger on the 20th. While there the group looked at 2 of the original cabins that date from the days of the CCC Camp in the 1930’s. These are historic structures and may be preserved.
o With the 50/50 campaign finished for the year, the first drawing was held at the dinner meeting on 10/22. Lion Marshall thanked everyone for making the sale a success in adding $1225.00 to our Community Service Funds.
o Lion Al Draht reported that the final ramp for the season was built in Horseheads; that made 8 ramps completed in this calendar year. There were two more work days at the Food Bank on 10/12 and 10/26. If you would like to be part of this fun activity or any other volunteer job at FBST call Lion Bill Powell.

Congratulations to all on many jobs well done!!!

The speaker at the 10/22 dinner meeting was Mike Smith, Chemung Co. Chair of Fire and Emergency Management, who described the work of the County during the recent tornado in Elmira that cut a swathe ten mile by 1 ½ mile through the city downtown from west to east. There was an advance notice for a few days prior to the event and 25 area volunteer fire depts. supplied much needed help. Weather warnings were posted on cell phones by NOAA. Mr. Smith also spoke about proposed legislation that would change the 911 operation to include both text and video messaging in reporting emergencies. He feels that this idea needs very careful consideration.

Club members news:
We installed a new member at out 10/22 meeting, Margie Flynn, sponsored by Lion Mary Ann. Lion Don Williams presided. Our sympathies go to Lion Dave Marks, whose mother-in-law passed recently. Lion Jim Ormiston is recovering from knee surgery. New Lion Margie will be having knee surgery on 11/27. Birthdays this month are Lion Merrill Lynn on 11/20 and Lion John Farr on 11/26.

Upcoming events in November include Community Kitchen on 10/9. Call Lion Dave Marks to help. Many hands will be needed on 11/10 to count, sort and help store the results of the Boy Scouts Scouting for Food Drive which will benefit the BF Food Pantry at the BF Presbyterian Church Repacking at the Food Bank will be Friday 11/9. Dinner meeting on Nov. 12 will be held at the Crystal House as the Community Center is closed for Veterans Day. Lion Neal will be recalling his WW II experiences in Paris. Lions are encouraged to bring names of area veterans from all wars and a stamped greeting card of thanks and appreciation so that we can remember some of our area heroes.

Join us at the next dinner meetings on 11/12 and 11/26 and have a joyous and filling Thanksgiving!!
